Wrap up of the 18th Annual Swim for Life Presented by M&T Bank

The 18th annual Hudson River Swim for Life which was held on Sunday, September 13th 2009 attracted swimmers of all ages and abilities but they all have one thing in common: they swam to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and for Friends of Claire. This year the event attracted 260 swimmers, 110 kayakers and over 100 volunteers. Fifty seven swimmers chose a one mile route this year, swimming parallel to the shore, while the rest swam from Nyack to Sleepy Hollow.

Of the total swimmers 45 opted to participate in the fourth annual Hudson River 5K Race which is part of this growing event. The racers swam to raise money for Friends of Claire whose mission it is to support the fight against ALS.

We hoped to collect $200,000 and with donations still pouring in, we expect to achieve, and hopefully exceed our goal.

Swimmers ranged in age from 8 to 70. With so many options, a one mile swim, a river crossing, and the race, swimmers of all abilities were represented - highly trained competitive swimmers, experienced open water athletes and recreational swimmers all took part. Please bookmark this site and visit again in May of 2009 to register for the 19th Annual Hudson River Swim For Life.

We are especially proud of Tiara Simmons, a double below-knee amputee who completed the 1 mile swim this year. Tiara courageously trained for months through Team in Training and it paid off when she successfully crossed the finish line with one of her swim coaches. She is truly an inspiration to many. Visit our press page to read more about Tiara as well as other inspiring stories about the swim.

Let us know if you'd like to be on a list to receive email alerts about this event.

See you in the fall of 2010!
